The Delhi police have apprehended 15 foreign nationals, two of them are Bangladeshi, who were residing and the country without valid visas and have sent them for deportation, an official statement said on Monday. The raid was conducted at Mohan Garden and Uttam Nagar areas of the national capital in the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration.

Twelve Nigerian nationals and one from Ivory Coast were among those detained. Police officials said all the 15 were overstaying in the country after the visas had lapsed and did not avail themselves of the opportunity to stay legally or extend their stay. Following the apprehension, they were taken to a detention centre as would be their standard procedure.

They were subsequently verified by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and given formal orders for deportation. Authorities also confirmed that they are now trying to arrange their return to their respective countries.

These individuals did not have any valid documents and were staying in India without any valid documents that could pose a threat to both security and legal concerns, a senior police officer involved in the operation said. “We will still do this kind of operation so that immigration rules are adhered to strictly.”

They also said that such enforcement drives will continue in the coming weeks, especially in the areas where large numbers of foreign nationals live. Taken as a broader initiative to track down and remove any who break the terms of their visas or who are in the country unlawfully, the move is also noteworthy.

Landlords and residents in urban areas have also been urged by officials to check the identity and visa status of foreign tenants to help stop the problem of illegal stay.
