While addressing a rally in Hisar, Haryana, on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi severely attacked the Congress party and alleged that the party had misappropriated Waqf properties across the country for political and personal gains in the name of serving the poor. He strongly disapproved of how waqf land in large tracts, which could have been an asset to poor and marginalized sections, was allegedly used by land mafias under the watching of Congress.
“Lakhs of hectares of land across the nation are registered under Waqf Board.” The Prime Minister said this land should have been used for the welfare of the poor, particularly helping helpless women, children, and the underprivileged. “Only if this land was used with honesty and a tinge of duty, my young Muslim brothers wouldn’t have to fix cycle punctures to earn a living as menial work.”
According to Modi, the Waqf properties were not really being used for the benefit of economically backward Muslims, and a few land mafias had taken undue advantage of the system to confiscate the properties of the poor. These groups were accused of moving upon the land that was the Dalits, backward castes, tribal communities, as well as widowed women who were in need of support the most.
“Nor did this corruption and land grabbing not only plunge opportunity further from the grasp of Muslims — they also impoverished the poorer, marginalized population. Misgovernance is not all; it is betrayal of trust,” he said.
With growing debates over the functioning and regulation of India’s Waqf boards, the Prime Minister’s remarks are noteworthy at a time when there is greater questioning over land ownership, management, and political misuse. Modi’s spoke was focused on attacking past regimes – especially the Indian National Congress – for its failures to tap these resources to enhance the lives of everyone included.
