Mumbai: The police have booked a man in a shocking case of attempts to kill a Mumbai IT professional by poisoning and defrauding him of Rs 1.96 crore. Ajinkya Ashok Mohite, a resident of Sion, has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 109 (attempt to murder), section 123 (cause hurt by poison) and Section 318 (4) (cheating), among other things, said the accused.
It is reportedly an incident that occurred between July 2022 and February 2025. Over a period of time, Mohite befriended a 43-year-old Thane-based IT professional and gained his trust. Ratnagiri-based Mohite told the victim to invest in lucrative land projects in Chiplun and told him that he had hotels there. Police sources said the victim had paid ₹ 92.7 lakh in cash in return for the land deal that never materialized.
The complaint also alleged that Mohite did not stop there. He got the victim emotionally manipulated and blackmailed, and threatened him until he got gold coins worth ₹1.03 crore from him. In a disturbing escalation, Mohite is accused of forcing the victim to write a will in Mohite’s name and supplying him with alcohol laced with a suspicious white powder.
The complaint listed forensic reports that said the victim had tricyclic antidepressants and barbiturates in his system, both strong sedative drugs with a known toxicity in excess. The findings indicate that it was a premeditated attempt to harm or even to kill the victim.
The police are investigating, and an FIR has been filed. In such a trust-based manipulation, both financial fraud and personal security have been raised as very serious concerns.
