Mumbai: Sunny Deol has returned to cinemas with his latest release. Following the massive success of his previous film, Gadar 2′, expectations were high for Jaat. However, the film had a relatively modest opening at the box office.

According to the industry tracker, Sunny Deol’s latest film, ‘Jaat’ earned Rs 9.5 crore at the box office on its opening day. The Hindi-language film recorded its highest occupancy in Chennai, Jaipur, and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote, “Jaat is much ado about a couple of uneaten idlis and an upset man in quest of an apology until bigger issues – the discovery of thorium in coastal Andhra Pradesh, the displacement of villagers who have lived there for centuries, and the corruption of politicians and policemen all too willing to play into the hands of international conspirators.”

Jaat also features Vineet Kumar Singh, Regina Cassandra, Saiyami Kher, Ramya Krishnan and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles.

The advance booking for Jaat ended on Wednesday night, with the Sunny Deol-starrer grossing just ₹2.37 crore in pre-sales for opening day across India. The figure is low, considering the film is being hyped as a pan-India actioner. In contrast, Sunny’s previous film – Gadar 2 – had grossed ₹17.60 crore in advance booking ahead of its release in 2023. Jaat has failed to reach ₹1 crore advance booking in any of the major territories apart from NCR, which should send some alarm bells ringing.
