A Dhaka court on Thursday issued fresh arrest warrants for former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her daughter Saima Wajed Putul and 17 others over a corruption case involving a residential land plot. After the court accepted the charge sheet submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) with the charge of alleged defrauding way the accused got the land, the development has been made.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order with the condition that arrest warrants be issued against the accused, as they had reportedly gone into hiding. The ACC prosecutor Mir Ahammed Salam, confirmed that the charge sheet was submitted by the ACC, and the judge accepted it and issued the arrest warrant accordingly. The court has further ordered that an investigation progress report must be presented to the ACC by May 4, 2025.

It stems from an ACC filed against the graft case, January 12, 2025, case, regarding the alleged illegal allocation of residential plot in the Purbachal New City Housing Project, a state-run Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) project. The charge sheet said Saima Wajed Putul had influenced her mother, then Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to jump the standard procedures and directly ask for the plot, which is contrary to legal procedures and RAJUK allocation rules.

Moreover, Putul, it is claimed, also went against eligibility norms as she already owned a piece of residential property in Dhaka. Putul, WHO Regional Director for Southeast Asia since November 2023, has been accused of acting with ‘malicious intent.”

It is not the first time arrest warrants have been issued against Sheikh Hasina and her associates. The warrants are similar to charges of crimes against humanity or enforced disappearances against senior government and military officials in previous cases before Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.
