Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee President Jitu Patwari sparked off a scathing political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when he launched a speech during the Congress National Convention held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Addressing party members, Patwari indicated that Modi could not be beaten if the RSS was not straightened out.
“Leaders afraid to oppose the RSS cannot defeat Modi, he said. To defeat Modi, you have to take on the RSS. RSS is one and the same as BJP and Modi.” Patwari also asserted that the RSS is not only a social or cultural outfit on the same face, it is a political and ideological one. “Fight them as you would any political organization. Don’t be afraid,” he added.
This comes at a time when the Congress leader is realising that it is important for the party to make a start at the ideological level with the attack on the BJP and its ideological bedrock — the RSS. If the RSS was not confronted, then BJP could not be removed from power, said Patwari.
He further stated that the Congress now knows that Gujarat has its symbolic and strategic value in national politics. Since both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are from Gujarat, beating the BJP in Gujarat would send a strong signal to the country. If they won, they would shatter to perception of them being invincible, and it could set off similar victories all over the other states.
Invoking Gujarat’s historic role in India’s freedom struggle, the Congress party is seeking to return to the hall of resistance and ride its popularity to battle BJP’s supremacy at the national level.
