The Itanagar Police, in a major breakthrough under the ongoing anti-drug campaign ‘Operation Dawn 2.0’ Monday, arrested a suspected drug peddler with the recovery of 44.36 grams of heroin from a spot inside the civil secretariat premises. The accused is at present employed as a multi-tasking staff in the state horticulture department and the arrest has sent shock waves across the state administration.
On Tuesday, Superintendent of Police of Itanagar Rohit Rajbir Singh also informed the media that the estimated market value of the seized heroin is about ₹3.7 lakh. The incident comes when a man was found to have been behaving suspiciously in a bathroom on the third floor of Block 3 and a security personnel alerted the police after the man’s carelessness was reported to the staff. The staff and security team’s alertness came to the fore in preventing a possible sale of narcotics on such high-security government premises.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kengo Dirchi promptly led a police team that detained the suspect at the scene. She was searched personally in the presence of First Class Magistrate Oli Koyu, in which 8 plastic vials and a tobacco container containing heroin weighing 32.76 grammes, 4 syringes used, and cash for ₹32,760 were seized.
However, when further queried, the suspect confessed that there was more contraband hidden behind the bathroom window. The police then, acting on the information, recovered another 18 plastic vials of suspected heroin and 3 pairs of scissors.
The accused is a resident of the Zero Point area near Gompa Mandir at Itanagar and is an immigrant from Borgolai Milan Nagar under the jurisdiction of the Margherita Police Station in Assam’s Tinsukia District. Supply network investigations continue to trace the supply network and to find other potential links.
