Lok Sabha proceedings on Friday were adjourned sine die following spirited protests by treasury benches over Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s remarks against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government and the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The benches started to raise slogans such as “Sonia Gandhi maafi maango” (asking Sonia Gandhi to apologise) for stating that the BJP was polarising the nation and that the Waqf (Amendment Bill) was a “brazen assault” on the Constitution.
After strongly protesting against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, the Congress party is now preparing to move the Supreme Court after the Bill got Parliament’s nod. Veteran Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a statement on X, said, “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” Ramesh asserted that the Congress party will “continue to resist all assaults of the Modi government” on the principles of the Constitution of India.
Meanwhile, hailing Parliament’s nod to the Waqf Bill on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the “end of an era of injustice and corruption”, saying that the Bill will bring justice to crores of people. His statement came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the passing of the Bill a “historic event”, thanking all the MPs for supporting the amendments. PM Modi said India will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice.
