Jabalpur: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has also mentioned that delay in the procurement of the medical items or equipment at the State Cancer Institute in Jabalpur is ‘despicable’. The Managing Director of the Health Services Corporation and the Principal Secretary of Medical Education have been summoned by the court, with complete records of them.
Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Vivek Jain questioned why medical equipment, which is essential for the institute, had not been purchased within nine years and an allocation of ₹84 crore was given to the institute. The court also asked why the tenders for equipment procurement were cancelled thrice.
The petition was filed by Jabalpur-based advocate Vikas Mahawar, and it pertains to the fact that there are no proper facilities, such as hospitals and bandwidth, to cater to the masses without delivering financial aid. The petition also alleges the lack of necessary medical equipment severely hurts cancer patients who cannot get the necessary treatment. Even though in 2016, some money was allocated to the institute to buy necessary equipment, it did not take that.
The High Court expressed concern over the delay in providing the concerned officials with the required order at the earliest and conveyed that the concerned officials should furnish a complete explanation along with relevant records. This case has been scheduled for the next hearing on April 17.
Seriously, the inefficiency and mismanagement of the sector of health have been questioned in the case. It is not only an administrative case of delay; it puts the lives of cancer patients in jeopardy. The aim of the court’s intervention is to make the public accountable and hasten up the process so that crucial healthcare services can be made available to people who need them.
