Kathua: Three terrorists and as many policemen were killed in a day-long gunfight in the remote forested area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. Seven other policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police, were injured in the encounter that was led by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and assisted by the Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), officials said.

The firefight broke out near Jakhole village, approximately 30 km from Hiranagar sector, where an earlier gun battle took place on Sunday (March 23). Officials said reinforcements were rushed to the spot, and an exchange of fire between the two sides was ongoing when last reports were received.

The Army’s special forces, which joined the counter-terrorism operation, were in action in Juthana. Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat had rushed to the encounter site to oversee the operation.

Security agencies believe the terrorists involved in Thursday’s encounter are the same group that managed to escape after Sunday’s gunfight in Hiranagar. The SOG launched that operation following intelligence inputs about their presence inside a ‘dhok‘ – a small enclosure – in a nursery at Sanyal village, near the International Border with Pakistan.
