On a day when he has been drawing attention to worldwide practices, especially in nations like India and Brazil, President Donald Trump signed Tuesday’s executive order to overhaul the U.S. election system. But the order underscores that these nations have connected voter identification to biometric databases, which is working differently than the U.S. system, which relies mostly on self-attestation that someone is a citizen.

For example, the executive order reads: “India and Brazil are tying voter identification to a biometric database, the United States relies on self-attestation for citizenship and so on.” Trump also stressed that although the United States is a pioneer of self-governance, it has yet to put in place minimum election protections that are customary in developed and developing countries alike.

The President also stressed the fact that elections must be free, fair and candid, as it is fundamental to the existence of the American constitutional Republic, in his statement. “The right of our citizens to have their votes properly counted and tabulated, without such illegal dilution, is vital to the resolution of any election in this Republic,” the order said.

The order makes the election process tighter and includes tightening of the safeguards on how votes are counted and elections from fraud, error or unlawful interference. This is reiterated to him that state governments, under the Constitution, are responsible for securing elections; however, state governments must do so pursuant to the federal laws that protect voting rights and combat illegal voting, discrimination and other forms of election fraud.

It also noted lapses in current U.S. election enforcement and that some states have given ballots the capacity to be counted after Election Day and allow people who are not citizens to register to vote, both of which the administration wants to end. Trump’s directive is a first step towards the promotion of election integrity reforms in the United States inspired by best international practices.
