Strongly condemning the recent controversial stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Ramdas Kadam, slammed him on Wednesday. In Maharashtra, any offensive comments on the court, state leaders or Hindu deities, including in the guise of comedy, will not be tolerated, Kadam declared.
Kadam told the media: “To repeatedly mock Hindu Gods, harm the Supreme Court, mock and inflict damage on the leaders of the state and doubly insult it as a joke — is not acceptable. For such comedy, this place cannot happen in Maharashtra. In response,” he said, “Kamra’s actions, like releasing songs attacking the government and administrations even when faced with legal action, demonstrate an abject disregard for the law. It is not that you (Kunal Kamra) are not above the law, rules, or administration. It added it will take action against him according to legal provisions.”
The public has been reassured that the accused are in custody, and strict legal proceedings have been taken to ensure justice against recent incidents of vandalism associated with the controversy.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed the same earlier, saying Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had stood firm on the issue. “Our CM Devendra Fadnavis has already said that the action will be taken as per the law,” Pawar told reporters.
The same was done by CM Fadnavis in the state Assembly on Monday, tushing Kunal Kamra’s alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to him, humour and political satire are acceptable in a democracy, but freedom of expression cannot transcend tyranny or insult. The Chief Minister took the matter further, calling Kamra’s act “low quality comedy” which does not respect the boundaries of civil discourse and public decency.
