New Delhi: A big controversy has hit a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, Justice Yashwant Varma, who has now been transferred after a fire incident at his official residence unearthed a large amount of unaccounted cash. The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended his transfer to the Central government had issued the transfer order. Varma will return to the parent court of the Allahabad High Court.
Reports have it that the incident broke out when Justice Varma was out of the city, and his official bungalow caught on fire. The builders quickly got the fire under control, and during their operations, they struck on containing mounds of money in various rooms of the home. This unaccounted money was a shocking discovery, and it was reported to authorities, immediately causing concern at such high levels of the judiciary.
As soon as the Supreme Court Collegium reviewed the incident report, it considered transferring Justice Varra from the Delhi High Court. But it is said that the transfer may not be over. According to several Collegium members, just transferring Justice Varma would not have been sufficient, as the allegations are serious. It is said that the former suggested the Chief Justice of India request Justice Varma’s resignation.
“If you refuse to answer the query, there are suggestions for constituting an independent committee of inquiry within the in-house.” If the first procedural step is taken, it will accomplish the possible removal of a sitting judge, and the process will happen through parliamentary proceedings.
In October 2021, he took oath as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Now, the judicial community is waiting to see how this unprecedented case will unfold.
