In an administrative reshuffle, five railway officials whose jurisdiction had jurisdiction over New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) were shunted out following the tragic stampede at NDLS on February 15 that claimed 18 lives. However, two of them have been reassigned to new roles in the Northern Railway (NR) Headquarters where they said the jobs were ‘punishment postings’ as they have no direct authority over railway operations.

A crowded crowd of passengers stampeded into boarding a train for Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for the Maha Kumbh Mela in the evening. After the incident, the rail administration issued four different transfer orders on March 4, 2025, taking five officials off their duties.

As Deputy Chief Operation Manager to the Freight Operations Information System at NR Headquarters in New Delhi, Mahesh Yadav was reassigned from the post of station director at NDLS. This comes after Northern Railway sent a notice dated March 12 which also transferred, and redesignated the post of Senior Divisional Operation Manager for Goods of Delhi Division as Deputy Chief Operation Manager (Dy COM) at NR Headquarters.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager responsible for leading passenger service in Delhi Division, Anand Mohan has been posted as Deputy Chief Operation Manager (Coaching). At the same time, Divisional Railway Manager Sukhwinder Singh and Additional Divisional Railway Manager Vikram Singh Rana have yet to be given new postings.

After his transition, the fifth official, Mahesh Chand Saini, was transferred to Kota soon after as Assistant Security Commissioner of Railway Protection Force at NDLS.

The tragedy is being investigated for accountability at a high level. After the report is submitted, such people will face serious action beyond transfers, a senior railway official assured.
