He said that as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other world leaders prepare to visit Washington, D.C., he ordered a cleanup of the city. At a Friday address to the Department of Justice, Trump pointed to his decision to stay the course to preserve the capital’s appearance and reduce the crime.

“We are cleaning up our city. This great capital is now being cleaned up. We are not going to put up with crime and taking down of graffiti and tents,” Trump said. Authorities and the administration were already working together to get the order restored, he added, noting the effort was underway.

In fact, Trump specifically mentioned that he didn’t want foreign dignitaries to witness the deteriorating conditions near federal buildings. “The previous day, there were tents everywhere, right opposite the State Department. I just told them to come down and they took them down right there. He remarked, ‘So far, so good. We want to have a capital of the world—the talk of the world—and present, as Gabi stressed, a world-class capital,” he said.

Trump recalled the visits of Prime Minister Modi, President of France and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and said that he personally ensured that the route which they took was cleaned up. “I didn’t want them to see tents, graffiti, broken barriers, potholes. It was beautiful, and we had it look like that.”

Trump also praised Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser for working well to clean up the city and, to some extent, acknowledging that she was doing a good job. His remarks were also suggestive of his view that the nation’s capital should be in keeping with the United States’ strength and prestige.
