Marathwada and Vidarbha saw an alarming rise in the number of farmer suicides and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Saturday raised serious concerns over the same and urged the Central government to formulate a comprehensive policy to support cultivators.

In response to that, Pawar’s remarks came after state relief and rehabilitation department data showed that 2,635 farmers took their own lives in Maharashtra in 2024 alone. “The information from Marathwada and Vidarbha is worrying,” Pawar said the news agency quoted him as saying while speaking to reporters in Baramati. “The information will be gathered accurately from different parts of the world. That is why the Centre should implement a policy to help the struggling farmers.”

Speculations Over Jayant Patil’s Future

In the ongoing speculations about Jayant Patil switching from the NCP leader’s faction to the Ajit Pawar-led faction, Pawar, however, said Patil had already made his stand clear to the media.

The state NCP president Patil has expressed an earlier contradictory statement that ”nothing about him was certain”, triggering speculation that he could leave the party. Nevertheless, Patil said his words had been misinterpreted after he met Sharad Pawar at an event in Baramati.

AI in Agriculture: A New Revolution

The emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in sugarcane cultivation was also discussed by Pawar, a former Union Agriculture Minister. According to him, AI will be applied to several sugar factories to improve crop quality.

“Sugarcane production can be greatly improved by AI technology.” Today we have scheduled a meeting with the officials of the sugar factory, we will take a revolutionary decision to integrate AI in farming, Pawar added.

Concerns Over Law and Order in Beed

Pawar also lamented the deteriorating law and order situation in the district after the very recent murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in Beed.

Once, Beed was a peaceful district. He said: “Unfortunately, some of them have been misusing their power which is why we are currently in this situation.”
