After India’s successful campaign in the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma will be India’s Test captain in the upcoming five-match series in England in June. Reportedly, the BCCI and the national selection panel are looking at Rohit leading the team to another high stakes overseas tour.

Speculation around Rohit’s future red ball cricket has been rife, and there have been questions about his current struggles. Concerns concerning his form and leadership, his underwhelming performances during India’s home Test season and a disappointing tour of Australia against Australia had done that. His decision to give up on the final Test in Sydney only incensed debate as to whether the final Test would be enough for him to step down as captain.

But India’s dominant victory in the Champions Trophy would have strengthened the faith in Rohit’s leadership. “He has shown what he can do — so it’s not just selfish and ill regard,” a senior official told a news agency. Everyone feels he is the easy choice to lead the Indian side for the England tour. Rohit also expressed his desire to continue playing red-ball cricket.

Rohit hasn’t shed any light on long-term Goal, but he has explained that he relishes his present place. He dismissed any immediate retirement speculation after India beat New Zealand to win the Champions Trophy final.

Rohit, however, remained open to his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup when asked about it. “At the moment I am playing very well and everything I am doing with this team is great. It’s very far away in 2027 I can’t say, but I’m not closing any options,” he told the ICC.

All eyes will now be on a failed leadership of Rohit on the England tour that will challenge him on multiple grounds, his captaincy and batting in hostile terrains.
