Officials reported on Friday that the Tripura Government Railway Police (GRP) took six abandoned bags containing 37 kilograms of dry ganja into police custody during a routine security check at Agartala Railway Station. All legal proceedings were followed by the confiscation of the narcotics, which were unclaimed, estimated to be worth ₹5.55 lakh on the market. They have launched an investigation to find the owner and intended recipients of the illegal consignment.
The GRP vowed that efforts are being beefed up to track down the supply chain and do away with drug smuggling in the area. The contraband was likely part of a larger network in the deal of illegal substances as preliminary investigations suggest. Authorities are trying to learn whether the men were working together with other organized drug syndicates that have cells in other states.
It is another major seizure in ganja hauls at this railway station, though, just days after a similar seizure also. In this regard, security personnel while carrying out the routine inspection near the Jirania-end bushes on March 12 also found seven gunny bags, containing 21 kilograms of dry ganja. Some 20,000 units of contraband that had not been claimed stood valued at approximately ₹3.15 lakh, which the police seized while going by the legal procedures. It was immediately the subject of an investigation to track down its source and destination.
The seized ganja was likely going to be smuggled to other regions, perhaps through wide networks of trafficking. Given the frequent such seizures, guards have been posted at railway stations, border areas, and transit points due to concerns of illegal drug trade in Tripura.
The authorities investigating the matter, between them the GRP and others, are continuing to dismantle the bigger smuggling network behind these illegal consignments. Further inquiries are ongoing.
