Rohit Sharma stated clearly that retirement was not on his mind the moments after leading India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title. As Kohli celebrates with Rohit, and with the stumps in hand, Rohit says to the photographers: ‘Hum koi retire nahi ho rahe hain”(We are not retiring). Many had said it could very well be the last ICC event for them both, and Rohit made sure there was no room for rumours.

He only repeated it at the post-final press conference: “One more thing I will not retire in this format, to put an end to any more rumours.” The Indian captain making this statement of intent has changed the way he hits the ball in white ball cricket.

Rohit’s aggression in his batting worked well for him in the 2023 ODI World Cup where he racked up over 500 runs at a strike rate of more than 100. He had led India to the finals, and despite that, he came back to take India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024. Now, with another ICC trophy in 2025, he has become the first Indian captain to win successive back-to-back ICC titles in different years. He also won POTM for his match winning 76 against New Zealand in the final.

His powerplay strike rate shows how his batting approach has changed. The 2019 World Cup figure of 67.74 has been surpassed since 2020, when it stands at 115.51, and not only that, Rohit has smashed more sixes in the first 10 overs than any other batter.

With such dominance, is Rohit Sharma destined to lead India in the ODI World Cup in 2027? Ricky Ponting believes so. Ponting told ICC that when you get to this stage of your career, everybody’s waiting for you to retire. “You can’t expect to be playing that well and Rohit was playing that well.”
