Presenting the annual budget of the 2025-26 fiscal year, the Assam government mentioned the fight against drug trafficking and human trafficking achieved in the state. “The arrests of nearly 700 human traffickers and seizure of 174kg of heroin in the state in 2024 played a big blow to the organized crime networks which are operating in the state,” said Ajanta Neog, the Finance Minister.

Drug trafficking is being increasingly cracked down by the state and with remarkable results. Apart from it, Assam Police also seized over 21,000 kg of ganja. By disrupting the drug cartels’ supply chains, these operations have made it more difficult for these warehouses to operate in the region.

Curb human trafficking, too, has been stepped up. In 2024, the Assam Police had over 450 cases and nabbed around 690 traffickers and successively rescued over 900 victims. The government’s proactive approach has considerably improved the Assam situation, making Assam safer, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The budget also gave progress in women’s safety besides crime control. The report of the Crime in India says that Assam jumped from 7th position to 14th position of crimes against women in 2023 as various safety measures had an effect.

The finance minister also complimented the success of the ‘Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina’ scheme encouraging girls’ education. The scheme, which was launched last year, offers financial support to girl students to reduce school dropouts & curb child marriage. An initiative benefited around 1.8 lakh girls, who got Rs 1,000-Rs 2,500 per month depending on their level of education.

And the Assam government continues to work towards strengthening law enforcement, improving the education situation, and providing the assurance of a better and more inclusive future for all.
