On Saturday, the ‘Mahila Samriddhi Yojana’, a scheme of giving ₹2,500 in monthly financial aid to a woman in Delhi, was approved by the Delhi Cabinet led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The Chief Minister announced it on International Women’s Day, reaffirming the commitment towards women security and welfare.

CM Rekha Gupta, while addressing an event, said that ‘today on Women’s Day, our cabinet has approved the scheme that we had promised during Delhi elections—to give ₹2,500 to women.’

If the scheme works, it would be over ₹2,100 more than what AAP had promised of ₹2,100 per month, as a key promise by the BJP during elections for the Delhi Assembly. It prompted a spate of political reactions which saw the leaders of BJP as well as AAP come out in support of the initiative.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed the decision, saying that a sum of ₹5,100 crore has been sanctioned for the implementation of the scheme in the first year. He, however, stated that registrations will soon begin and a data portal will be launched for them to apply for benefits.

The move was praised by Delhi Minister Ashish Sood who hailed it as historic saying BJP stands by action, not mere slogans. He assured that as soon as the registration process is completed, financial assistance would be provided immediately.

However, AAP leader Sanjay Singh dismissed the scheme as grossly ineffectual because it would benefit less than 10 percent of Delhi women. He then criticized the BJP government and referred to the initiative as another ‘jumla’ of PM Modi’s empty promises.

The political debate on the scheme’s effectiveness and reach is likely to continue as the Delhi government braces for the rollout of the scheme.
