The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked an international gold smuggling network from several airports in India. It comes in the wake of the arrest by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Monday night of the Kannada actor Ranya Rao in connection with an alleged gold smuggling case.

Sources further said, the CBI has worked closely with DRI and has already dispatched two teams to Bengaluru and Mumbai airports for verifying the broader network. They suspect several smuggling syndicates are active, luring gold into the country by using outsiders at airports along with the insiders.

Our only motivation is to discover probable participation of public servants like customs officers, cops, and others in facilitating the illegal transfer of gold, the CBI official said. It also investigates how these networks operate and liaise with international counterparts in unnoticed smuggling gold into the country.

Given the complexity of the case, the CBI can place Ranya Rao under custody for further interrogation at another date and stage. According to the DRI, it has passed intelligence to indicate that other major Indian airports might be configured with similar smuggling networks that favor government officials.

Authorities are expected to widen their probe into the financial and logistical aspects of the operation. Concerns have been raised by Ranya Rao’s involvement about the reach of the network and possible criminal connections. Now, the CBI is most concerned with finding out the scope of the smuggling ring and getting to the bottom of quarrying the culprits.
