In a go-ahead to two important ropeway projects in Uttarakhand in the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, the Union Cabinet approved them today. The projects are geared toward improving connectivity to prominent religious and tourist spots in the state, with the hope of enhancing accessibility for pilgrims and visitors.

The approved projects are a 12.9 kilometre ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath and a 12.4 kilometre ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib. This is one of the most frequented pilgrimage circuits in India and both these routes attract lakhs of devotees and trekkers every year.

Sonprayag-Kedarnath ropeway will reduce pilgrims’ travel time to the shrine, which is the holiest day of Hinduism and a much faster and safer alternative to the traditional trekking route. The trek currently takes several hours to complete, and because the trek can be subject to unpredictable weather and rough terrain, it can be challenging. The ropeway will reduce the journey to just minutes, making the pilgrimage convenient, not just for the elderly, the differently-abled or pilgrims living in faraway places, but also for average travellers.

The Govindghat Hemkund Sahib ropeway likewise will help countless Sikh pilgrims on their journey to the revered Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, situated at an extremely high altitude over 4,000 meters. With the ropeway on board, this route is sure to become more convenient as it has always featured a difficult trek, and the ropeway ensures much smoother, quick access.

It is a line of projects consistent with the government’s objective of creating ecologically friendly and sustainable transport solutions in hilly terrains. They also lower the reliance on using roads, and therefore, the effect on the environment as well as foot traffic management.

With these approvals, Uttarakhand, which is set to get an improved infrastructure, boosting religious tourism for better and safer journeys of pilgrims.
