It has been 10 days now since eight workers were trapped inside the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Nagarkurnool of Telangana in need of rescue, with no breakthrough yet. At first glance, rescue teams have been unable to get through to the engineers and laborers trapped since February 22.

“Twelve specialised agencies have been working non-stop since the past night to locate and rescue the trapped people,” NDRF Commandant VVN Prasanna Kumar said. “Nevertheless, the complexity of the tunnel structure has been a major hindrance to progress. Experts from across the land are helping with the operation. But we have been unable to establish communication and find them yet,” Kumar said.

Top specialists and advanced equipment are deployed by both the Telangana and Central governments to help with the operation. It is all made more unstable and difficult by the narrow and unstable structure of the tunnel, the debris, and possibly the waterlogging. However, the authorities remain hopeful despite the challenges: the complex tunnel system and the unstable terrain.

He assured that maximum manpower and resources have been used strategically. “We have not reached success yet but we are working step by step, and certainly we will reach them in near future,” he told a news agency.

With workers trapped at a mine in Telangana, all families wait anxiously for more news as rescue teams press forward on a high risk mission. Officials remain determined to break through and to always have a top priority with the operation remaining.
