In a veiled attack at the Narendra Modi government, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused it of neglecting rights of Dalits by not filling vacancies in the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) as it should have. The Congress leader criticised the government for not doing anything, terming it a BJP’s anti-Dalit mindset. Speaking about the vacant posts, he said that leaving such important posts vacant hampers the capability of the commission to safeguard the rights of the Scheduled Castes.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take immediate steps to fill the vacancies and ensure that they are duly filled as soon as possible. The NCSC is a constitutional institution whose function is to protect the Dalit rights. For instance, a direct attack on their constitutional and social rights is to weaken it by keeping key positions vacant; this is still a continuation of what is happening,” he said.

The NCSC has a crucial function in settling grievances and bringing about social, educational, and economic upliftment of Scheduled Castes in India. At present, the chair of the commission is Kishor Makwana. Dreadfully though, the two major posts on which the NCSC still relies—Vice Chairman and Member—were and are still vacant on the NCSC’s official website.

However, such critics of the changes say that the vacancies hurt the commission’s efficiency and delayed the resolution of critical issues faced by Dalits all over the country. Congress leaders have described this as an intentional ploy to diminish institutions intended to give a voice to the voiceless people.

Despite pressure from the opposition mounting, it is yet to be seen whether the government will move to fill these essential positions in the coming days as Rahul Gandhi demands. However, the Congress party keeps pushing up the issue for now, highlighting still another standout point in its mainstream criticism of the BJP-led government’s social justice policies.
