An Indian student in a coma after being seriously injured in a road accident in California, has been granted an emergency visa by the United States embassy to the family. Allowing her family to travel and be with her at this crucial time allows her family to travel.
Tanaji Shinde, the father of Neelam, has confirmed that they will reach the US by Saturday to see their daughter, who is still in a coma and whose condition has slightly improved.
“On February 16, I got a call from her roommate who did not immediately tell me about the accident. Later, Neelam’s uncle informed about it. Despite this, my daughter is still in a coma and her health has grown a little better. After an interview, they granted us visas at the embassy within half an hour.” Tanhaji Shinde, speaking to a news agency, said “We are going to the US tomorrow.”
Shinde expressed his thanks to the Indian government, Maharashtra government and the media for their help in expediting the visa application process.
“The central and Maharashtra governments have helped us a lot. It (media) played a significant role as well.” He added that his daughter is fighting for her life and all he and his family can do is hope and pray for her recovery.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had taken necessary steps to ensure the US authorities expedite the Visa process for the Shinde family. In times of crisis, India has at times exhibited strong diplomatic coordination with the US and such quick intervention is a result of that.
While the Shinde family gets set to fly to the US, Neelam continues to be prayed for with wishes for a speedy recovery.
