Elon Musk warned U.S. federal workers’ one last time’ to justify their roles or be fired. It follows after employees in federal agencies across many departments virtually ignored his initial deadline. Such confusion and tension were among an already anxious workforce due to the ruling from Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk, even as many government workers were reportedly advised by their agencies to disregard his directive.

Originally, Elon Musk sent an email to government employees demanding to be told what they do and why it’s important. This could have formed the foundation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that Musk coaxes the country to administer, where he serves as head. That aligns with Musk’s broader goal of reducing the time it takes to do much of what it does, but that dream has faced opposition from agencies, legal action, and political pushback.

Musk nonetheless tweeted Monday night that company employees would have yet another chance to respond, subject to presidential discretion, after not joining with the initial lack of compliance. But he said that failure to do so a second time would result in ‘termination’ without setting a new deadline.

It reflects growing tensions between Musk’s push for efficiency and government institutions, in particular, some of whose agencies have not acknowledged the directive, including those headed by Trump loyalists. Musk said that his original request was ‘utterly trivial… but so many failed even that inane test, and on in some cases, urged on by their managers.’

DOGE’s fight against federal spending hasn’t been met with resistance, as it continues to win the war while numerous court rulings and lawmakers move to decimate the policies. It is unclear whether Elon Musk will succeed in reengineering the federal workforce, but his latest ultimatum now shows he is far from giving up.
