On a Friday morning that saw the ongoing Assam Assembly session being adjourned twice due to protests by Congress lawmakers over the attack on Dhubri MP Rukibul Hussain in Rupohihat, Nagaon district, the chaos continued. This prompted the opposition to strongly demand that the House discussion be immediately held on the matter and it created a disturbance to the House proceedings.
Thursday was the incident that saw Hussain travelling with his PSOs to attend a public meeting when the incident took place. They were ambushed by a group of unidentified attackers who attacked the security men and assaulted Hussain with a cricket bat. The MP survived, although two of the officers were slightly injured, police reports added. The assailants in the video clip are seen aggressively attacking the PSOs while they are trying to assault Hussain.
It may be remembered that when the House convened at 9:30 AM Friday, Congress leader Debabrata Saikia moved an adjournment motion and requested that the House speaker Biswajit Daimary, allow a one-hour discussion by delaying other agenda items. However, the Speaker declined the request and stated that rules do not allow for adjournments of the first day of the session when the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address is being discussed. He said that there would be a separate time to discuss the attack.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s response in the House on Thursday was not sincere Saikia, adding that Sarma failed to respond to the concerns about MP’s security. The growing calls over political violence in the state have prompted Congress to demand a thorough investigation and strict action against the attackers.
