The Karnataka Lokayukta police in the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case do not have evidence to prove that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his wife Parvathy and the other accused shirked their duty and have consequently given a clean chit to the three persons. Following the probe, which had lasted several months, the Lokayukta concluded its submission of a final report to the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday.

The Lokayukta police, while making a statement, said that the charges against the accused could not be substantiated. “They also informed that since there was no evidence on the above allegations against accused 1 to accused 4 of the case, the final report is being given to the High Court,” the letter sent by the Lokayukta police was addressed to Snehamayi Krishna, the complainant in the case.

MUDA was accused of carrying out site allocations in irregularities, including attempts by government officials and persons of influence to get unjust benefits. But it was only after a detailed investigation that Lokayukta police ruled out that there was any substantial proof to support these claims.

The development is a major relief for Siddaramaiah’s government that is reeling under political charges of corruption. Many supporters of the chief minister have applauded the verdict, saying that a clean chit to him reinforces his integrity. But opposition leaders can complain about transparency and demand further review.

After the case closed, the Karnataka government might return to governance and ongoing developmental works.
