India and Qatar further enhanced their bilateral relations on Tuesday as they upgraded the nature of ties between the countries from a strategic cooperation to a strategic partnership. It came following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, at a high level to explore ways to expand trade and energy cooperation between the two countries.
President Droupadi Murmu warmly welcomed Sheikh Tamim at Rashtrapati Bhavan for this momentous occasion, the two leaders had a wide-ranging discussion of a plethora of issues and then went to attend the celebrations. On Monday, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the Amir in New Delhi personally and highlighted the importance of the India-Qatar relationship. They both stressed mutual interests in, among other sectors, the areas of trade, energy, and security, which are core elements of their growing partnership.
The meeting also covered key international issues and regional and global developments, and both sides exchanged views. One particular topic that was discussed was Qatar’s role in helping to broker a recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that was ongoing.
Earlier in the day, a platform was provided to India and Qatar to further develop their economic ties during the India-Qatar Business Forum organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his counterpart in Qatari, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al-Thani, also said trade between the two countries has great potential for growth. Its business forum explored new avenues for relationships and a new investment opportunity in the pursuit of making India and Qatar business partners, which in turn contribute to adding fuel to the growing economic links between the two countries.
The elevated strategic partnership stands for the positive work between the two countries in different related fields, producing a prosperous future for both sides.
