Ranveer Allahbadia, podcaster, gets interim protection from arrest in the case of alleged obscene remarks by him on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent. Nevertheless, the court also reprimanded him for the indecent remarks and imposed strict conditions on his activities in the future.

The Supreme Court, in the ruling, has also restrained Allahbadia from airing any more YouTube shows and thus has put a temporary ban on his online content. The court also allowed no further FIRs to be filed against him in connection with India’s Got Latent episode, which became a controversy.

It was in a significant move that the apex court also instructed Allahbadia to deposit his passport with the police, preventing him from travelling abroad. In addition, he has been told not to leave the country without permission from the court prior. These restrictive measures show the seriousness with which the court is taking this case, weighing freedom of expression against good manners and restrictive content creation from others.

The controversy came to light when the remarks made by Allahbadia on the show sparked public outrage and got legal action. Still, he sought to protect himself from arrest, but the court’s stance was pretty strong against such content. It reignited debates on responsible speech in digital media and content creators’ liability for content they upload to platforms like YouTube.

The issue is due to be brought up at a hearing in the coming days to decide if the restrictions will remain or whether Allahbadia will be hit with more legal repercussions. He continues to be watched by the court, with his capacity, for the time, to create content and venture out from India severely curtailed.
