Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged a unified European armed forces that would arise naturally out of his country’s fight against Russia. At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Zelenskyy said Europe must strengthen its own defence, not relying on U.S. support in the event of a crisis.
Zelenskyy added: “The time is no longer acceptable, it’s time to create armed forces of Europe. While European leaders have talked about the need for a common military force for quite some time, he asserted that Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia has made it absolutely necessary. Geopolitical uncertainties, he warned, could result in such conditions in which ‘America may say no to Europe in delivering things that threaten it’ means ‘Europe must be able to be sufficient by itself from a defence perspective.”
Zelenskyy also mentioned the recent phone conversation between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Trump said he was coming to an agreement between Russia and Ukraine for peace. After Trump promised Zelenskyy that Ukraine would be included in any talks, Zelenskyy said that his country would not be party to any backroom deals.
‘Ukraine will never agree to deals behind our backs when we are not involved, and that is the same that should be expected of the whole of Europe when it comes to the end of the war,’ he stated, calling for transparency and the right representation in talks to resolve the conflict.
The remarks by Zelenskyy describe Ukraine’s increasing drive to develop a more autonomous and independent basis of European security, with actions to substantiate a united military group to tackle future hazards.
