The officials confirmed on Tuesday that a tiger which had strayed out of West Bengal’s Sunderban forest and injured a forest department staffer has been captured and released safely back into the wild. The incident took place in the South 24 Parganas district at Nagenabad village, which is near the Sunderban Delta’s reserved forest area.
Monday evening was first when the big cat was seen, prompting the officials to set up two cages with bait and a net to catch it. The tiger was trapped early Tuesday morning, saving the villagers from getting it.
There was a dramatic encounter during the operation. It suddenly charged out of deep undergrowth as officials tried to cordon off the spot where the tiger was hiding. In a shameless ploy to get a shot at a tiger, a man fell in front of the tiger and again when trying to clamber a tree. But Ganesh Shyamal, a member of the quick response team, rushed in to save him just before the evidence of a very imminent danger took place. Shyamal was unfortunately attacked by the tiger and was injured.
Other forest officials and villagers reacted immediately and drove the tiger away using sticks. Shyamal was quickly taken to a hospital in Kolkata and was there receiving treatment. His condition is said to be stable.
On Monday, a video of the tiger attacking a man emerged on social media, which is unverified. Officials were swift to capture and relocate the tiger without further incidents and put the entire region on alert.
In India, the Sunderbans cover a vast area of 4,200 square kilometres; Bengal tigers abound in the area numbering close to 100. This ecologically important area remains under conservation efforts so that human safety can be balanced with wildlife protection.
