While 14 Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian touts were apprehended on the Indo-Bangladesh border in the past week by the Border Security Force (BSF), their enhanced operations have been increased on the Indo-Bangladesh border also. They mark a response to heightened vigilance to prevent illegal activities along the border.
BSF has apprehended 14 Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian touts in the independent and joint operations. Moreover, a huge quantity of narcotics, sugar, cattle, as well as other contraband items to the value of Rs 2.5 crore has been confiscated, a senior BSF officer said.
In the past month, the BSF has broken various trans-border smuggling networks, fake passport syndicates, and infiltration and exfiltration cases. Drug smuggling, human trafficking and importation of contraband items including oil, livestock, and other items keep rearing through the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura. There has been a recent surge in sugar smuggling in the region and recent enforcement measures have been taking place.
It is also pointed out by the officer that clashes with the sugar smugglers had given rise to attacks on BSF personnel and therefore there was an augmentation of surveillance along the border. The BSF has, in its response, done over 80 joint patrols along with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), while at several levels, several border coordination meetings have been held to ensure better security and coordination.
To reach out to local concerns and their perceptions, BSF battalions have organized more than 40 village coordination meetings with people living in border areas.
Tripura has an 856 km long international border with Bangladesh which is yet to be fenced, partially due to some local disputes. The BSF is trying its best to secure these vulnerable areas and prevent cross-border crimes.
