State health department officials said there are 130 suspected cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) now in Pune and various other districts of Maharashtra. Two suspected deaths in the state have occurred if the disease, which strikes the nervous system and can lead to sudden numbness, muscle weakness, and even paralysis, is.
A report by health officials stated that a 56-year-old woman from Pune and a man from Solapur district have died of suspected GBS. Three new suspected infections were recorded on Wednesday, taking the number of cases up to 130. Of them, 73 have been confirmed as GBS cases.
The breakdown of the affected areas shows 25 patients from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, 75 from newly added villages under PMC, 13 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) areas, nine from Pune’s rural regions, and nine from other districts. They are closely monitoring the situation and have since further investigations underway.
A District Planning Committee meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday to deal with the rising health crisis. Pawar, Pune district guardian minister, directed that civic and district health officers take strict action against hospitals that charge a heavy sum for treating patients of GBS (Guillain Barre Syndrome). He also stressed the necessity to assure an adequate supply of drugs for its treatment.
However, as the pace of the cases is increasing, the health authorities are calling on the populace to stay apprised and take care where they are experiencing body inclination or trouble in movement. In addition, the government is taking the additional step of improving the health facilities so as to be able to handle the increasing number of cases.
