A small aircraft has crashed near Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, according to local officials. According to media reports, there was a mid-air collision between an American Airlines flight CRJ (AA5342) coming from Wichita and a Washington DC Police helicopter while landing at Ronald Regan International Airport.

For the unversed, more than a quarter of the passengers traveling through Reagan National fly on American Airlines, the most of any commercial air carrier there. The airline served more than 6 million passengers at the airport for the 12 months that ended in October.

Three US Army soldiers were onboard the Black Hawk helicopter that collided with the passenger jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, an official has told the media. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told that the status of the soldiers is unknown, but added that no senior officials were on the helicopter.

While the cause of the crash still remains a mystery, sources reveal that both are down in the Potomac River and search and rescue boats have been deployed to the area.

Takeoffs and landings have been halted at the airport as emergency personnel respond to the incident, the airport wrote in a post on X. Emergency personnel are responding to the incident on the airfield. Meanwhile, the terminal remains open.
