On Wednesday, the Haryana government said it will file an FIR against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his claim that the Yamuna river water coming to Delhi from Haryana is ‘poisoned.’ Haryana officials have accused Kejriwal of spreading misinformation and fueling needless fear with the statement.
Under Sections 2(d), 54 of the Disaster Management Act, legal action is being taken against Kejriwal, said Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Vipul Goel. For spreading misinformation and creating panic among Delhi and Haryana people, Goel said an FIR had been sent to be registered. He also said that the Election Commission has also requested Kejriwal to clarify the basis of his claims.
“The controversy started when Kejriwal alleged Monday that the Yamuna river water flowing into Delhi from Haryana was polluted with poison.” His claim was quickly a political tiff, with Haryana officials strongly denying his allegations. They contended that such petty claims could spark unnecessary fear among residents and public confidence in the state’s water management.
Haryana officials say the state is providing clean and safe water to all areas, including Delhi. They said Kejriwal made baseless allegations without any scientific evidence. The tension between the state and Delhi governments is reflected in the FIR, which is seen as a big move against the AAP leader.
Authorities in the state will launch legal action while Kejriwal responds to charges as the situation unfolds. The Election Commission has joined in criticizing his statement, saying it has ‘political implications’ and is reviewing the matter.
