India has flatly denied the allegations in a Canadian commission’s report that investigated claims of foreign interference in Canada’s elections. The MEA dismissed the insinuations, saying that Canada itself has been interfering in India’s internal affairs.

“It feels like we’ve seen a report about alleged activities of purported interference. In fact, it is Canada that has been consistently meddling in India’s internal affairs,” the MEA said. The ministry pointed to how Canada’s actions fuelled illegal migration and organized criminal activities. It also urged Canadian authorities to address such concerns and not to let the system of support behind such issues continue.

Indian state suspected of using proxy agents to secretly fund candidates from 3 political parties in federal election: report. But India categorically turned down these claims as baseless and politically motivated.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau launched the inquiry into foreign election interference in September 2023. Justice Marie-Josée Hogue was assigned to head the probe into China, Russia, and other countries. This comes after a June 2023 National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians report, saying that some Canadian lawmakers had knowingly or in part engaged in foreign interference.

India’s response is firm and shows that the diplomatic frost is not thawing. New Delhi has repeatedly accused Canada of being home to extremist elements being sheltered by it and failing to stop groups promoting anti-India activities. With bilateral relations still sour, India also hopes Canada will turn its attention to its internal security rather than indulge in unverified allegations against other states.
