Sanjay Roy has been put behind the bar for the rest of his life after Sealdah Court on Monday convicted him for the RG Kar rape and murder case. Other than life imprisonment, the court has also mandated the convict to pay ₹50,000 as a fine.
This comes after the court made a ruling on January 18, where Sanjay Roy was convicted of the heinous act. The case brought into the limelight and which created quite a sensation amongst the populace was the brutal attack followed by a murder that occurred on the campus of RG Kar Medical College. The occurrence was not only a scandal for the locals but also posed real concerns about the safety and security of institutions.
In the trial, the prosecutors brought in confusion, such as reports that suggested Roy was guilty, and several witness statements also supported this. The court also held that from the given evidence and the arguments that have been developed, the accused was guilty of reasonable doubt.
During the delivery of the verdict, the court acknowledged the seriousness of the offence on the family of the victim and society in general. “It baffles reason that in this so-called civilized society we allow such acts of violence to be committed. This is both punishment and retribution,” said the judge when pronouncing the sentencing of the specific sentence.
The family of the victim also welcomed the judgment, saying that justice had been done. However, they also urged for more stringent action to be taken to avoid the repetition of such circumstances.
Some have applauded the verdict regarding the improvement in the situation, using other words to describe how activists and legal specialists need revolutionary changes in the legal system to protect such people and how justice needs to be served faster regarding such cases.
The RG Kar rape-murder case reminds one of the sorry state of our country: how can justice be delivered? How can vigilance be maintained so that such mishaps do not happen?
