In a huge leap towards developing healthcare in Karnataka, the government of Karnataka has made bone marrow transplantation another procedure that is now available for free through the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka Scheme. This was expressed by the BJP Bengaluru Rural MP, Dr. CN Manjunath, through social media, previously known as Twitter or X.
Dr. Manjunath said that he had been arguing to include the Bon Marrow Transplantation in the scheme and has been talking to the State Government, specifically the Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department. Its harvest has now been reaped by adding a life-saving procedure to the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka / Jeevan Sarthakathe.
Bone marrow transplantation is an important medical procedure for managing a number of diseases, including bone cancer, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, and other hematological diseases. The same has been costly over the years, with private healthcare organizations charging between Rs. 20 to 40 lakhs per session while those in the public sector charging between Rs. 10 to 12 lakhs per session. Many of these costs have frequently hampered several patients, especially those of low-income status, from getting the required treatment.
There is; however, hope for such patients through the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka Scheme, under which bone marrow transplantation required was categorized; hence one is able to receive the treatment free of charge in impaneled hospitals. This decision is going to benefit many families suffering from such devastating diseases providing them with an opportunity to receive necessary treatment free of charge.
The decision signifies and is also in line with the government’s plan to enhance the delivery of healthcare services to society, starting with marginalized and poor sectors. This fits well into the other objectives of Ayushman Bharat, which is to offer affordable healthcare to the people in India.
