17 January was the last date to file the Delhi Assembly elections nominations. 981 candidates filed 1,521 nomination papers for 70 assembly seats, out of which 680 nomination papers were filed on 17 January.

Two days reserved for withdrawal of nominations: Nominations began in Delhi with the release of the election notification on January 10, in which 555 candidates filed 841 nomination papers, and the last date for nomination on Thursday was January 17. Now the Election Commission will scrutinize the nomination papers on January 18, in which candidates will be declared if all the papers are found to be correct. Then, if the candidates wish, they will be able to withdraw their nominations for two days, January 19 and 20.

Assembly Had Fewest Sittings & Fewest Bills

The outgoing assembly was the worst ever in terms of number of sittings. The assembly met for 74 days over five years, which is the lowest compared to all its previous five-year terms. It functioned for an average of three hours on the days it met, the PRS findings said.

The outgoing assembly passed 14 bills bills, lowest since all its previous five-year terms. Five bills passed by the Assembly amended laws to increase the salaries and allowances of MLAs, Ministers, the Leader of Opposition, the Chief Whip, the Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker. These Bills were passed in the Assembly in July 2022, and received assent from the President 225 days later in February 2023.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Nomination

AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal is contesting from Delhi assembly constituency, facing Sandeep Dixit from Congress and Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma from BJP. A total of 29 candidates have filed 40 nomination papers in New Delhi assembly constituency. A total of 6 candidates have filed 9 nomination papers in Kasturba Nagar assembly constituency.

Congress and Aam Aadmi Party are contesting all the seats alone in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. The Bharatiya Janata Party has given two seats to NDA allies JDU and LJP Ram Vilas. Under the NDA quota, Delhi’s Burari seat has been given to JDU and Deoli seat to LJP Ram Vilas.
