Before the forthcoming Delhi Assembly poll, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to provide a 50% concession on the fare structure for students who are using the Delhi Metro. The letter was sent just hours before the BJP was planning to come out with its document on polls for the elections. Kejriwal further said that the scheme meant that students would be relieved of the burden of the high cost of transportation and they would be able to afford public transport.
In a press conference later, Kejriwal also announced another major initiative for male students in the city: free bus rides if the AAP is re-elected on February 5. The AAP government had earlier provided a similar waiver for women and helped them ease travel by buses by providing them free rides. Now, the party wants to extend this effort to cover male students in order to encourage more education and lessen the burdens of costs.
Nevertheless, Kejriwal was forthright about the situation of free bus rides for male students, and the AAP leader stated that due to MCC in Delhi, it could not be done. The MCC has put measures in place to limit the publicizing of the new schemes and initiatives just before the election. However, Kejriwal urged the people of Delhi that if the AAP government is formed again, this step will be given top priority.
In the letter, Kejriwal suggested that the Centre and the Delhi government should bear the student subsidy 50:50 as they are equal stakeholders in the Delhi Metro Corporation (DMRC). He emphasized that today, metro fares are deemed rather high for students, and the given discount would help cut the costs. The AAP leader said that the discount scheme may be implemented after the elections in case AAP had won the polls.
