Gwalior: Tanu Gurjar, 20, was allegedly shot dead by her father, Mahesh Gurjar, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, days before she was due to marry. The terrible incident occurred on Tuesday, four days before she was supposed to be wed and is thought to have been due to Tanu’s rejection of the marriage that had been arranged for her by her family. For Tanu, it was more about marrying a man of her own preference, not realizing that this must have burned her father.
Tanu had rebelled by announcing her stand in front of the family that she had no intention of marrying the man of her parent’s Choice. There was unequalled candour when she declared in public that she wanted to marry someone she loved. Apparently, she posted a video on the social site protesting against the arrangement earlier that day; rebellion was her stance. Everything seems to point towards this video provoking the father into a fit of violence.
At about 9 p.m. in the night in the Gola Ka Mandir area of Gwalior, Mahesh Gurjar allegedly threatened his daughter as a policeman, pointing a gun at her. Mahesh, who had a country-made pistol, fired at Tanu and shot her in the chest. Rahul, her cousin, is also reported to have joined in the attack and fired more shots at the forehead, neck as well as between the eye and the nose. Tanu fainted at the site and died right on the spot.
The police were also there as Tanu had raised her alarm before and made some attempts to get protection. However, there were policemen around who escorted them, Mahesh demanded to talk to his daughter in private as he said he could persuade her to heed her family’s decisions.
