On Monday, Prime Minister Sh Narendra Modi opened the 6.5 km long Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal district in Central Kashmir, which is a major infrastructural project for giving connectivity throughout the year tourist spot of Sonamarg. It also has much value to defense as it improves connectivity, making it faster and safer across the tunnel in the area.
The Prime Minister arrived at Srinagar airport around 10:45 am and moved to Sonamarg for such a historical event. He arrived in the company of the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Z-Morh tunnel connecting Gagangir and Sonamarg belongs to the big list of costly tunnels that cost more than ₹2,700 crore to construct. Part of the construction design involves the construction of a two-lane tunnel with a cross-sectional area of approximately 7.5m and an emergency escape passage to facilitate safe passage through this terrain. Located at a height of over 2650 meters above sea level, the tunnel will enhance the connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, which will be much easier during the winter season when the conventional route remains snowbound. In addition, the tunnel is vital, especially to travelers going to the Leh region, as it helps skip through dangerous areas.
The transport event, an important inauguration, had Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari, who had preceded to Srinagar a day prior to the occasion.
During the visit, PM Modi also thanked the construction workers who worked hard regardless of the difficult conditions prevailing during the construction of the project. The Z-Morh tunnel project has earned significant importance for finalizing the physical infrastructural up-gradation in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and adding strategic advantage to both the civil and defense domain and further to the growth of the tourism and the economy of the region.
