President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, unfairly attacked California officials on Sunday by stating that they are incompetent while managing the calamitous wildfires raging in neighbourhoods bordering Greater Los Angeles. Then, one day, with his Truth Social account, Trump turned to criticise the authorities, complaining, “The fires are still going in L.A. The incompetent pols (politicians) have no idea how to put them out.” He said, “This is one of the worst catastrophes in the history of our country. All they are able to do is escalate the fires. What’s wrong with them?”
The number and severity of the wildfires have saturated the LA capacity for firefighting, forcing many to question the ability of the state to deal with such large-scale disasters. Civilian-populated regions such as Pacific Palisades said that nearly all their fire hydrants had run out of water, thus preventing proper fire extinguishing. A combination of drought, reduced precipitation, and overreliance on borehole water have also made firefighting operations difficult throughout the affected region.
And as the opportunities for predatory stock manipulation continue, so have in-residence questions concerning the state’s readiness and the sufficiency of the infrastructure in the affected areas. Having seven days before his trip back to the White House, Trump has not stepped up his attacks on California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom yet. Trump criticized Newsom and other officials of his state for their inability to take action in the face of the calamity.
Trump, on the other hand, needs to be invited by Governor Newsom of California to LA in person to have a look at the disaster that has befallen it. However, the wildfires are estimated by the state officials that at least 16 people have been killed, more than 150,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, and over 12,000 buildings and homes have been burnt. The new emergency has revealed not only the risks of fire catastrophes but also the difficulties of preventing and managing them as large-scale natural disasters.
