IMD has forecasted that there will be heavy rain in certain areas of Tamil Nadu, especially on Saturday, and on Sunday, there will be a yellow rain alert. The IMD’s regional meteorological centre in Chennai has forecasted substantial rain showers in an isolated manner in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai districts and Karaikal on Saturday.
In its forecast, the IMD said that light to moderate rain is expected in one or two places over Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. While southwestern states will receive heavy rains, moderate to hot and dry conditions are expected to prevail over Interior Tamil Nadu. Moreover, there can be mist or haze during the morning period at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
Moving ahead to Sunday, IMD predicted that several places in Coastal Tamil Nadu will experience light to moderate showers; at some places, there could be thunderstorms and lightning. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over southern West Bengal, Sikkim, East and Northeast India, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. It has turned out that thunderstorms and lightning will be present throughout the weekend with special intensity in the regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between January 12-14.
The IMD further said that such weather prevailed under the influence of a cyclonic circulation prevailing in the lower troposphere over the southeast bay of Bengal and adjoining southwest bay of Bengal and practising the existing weather system. The department also issued a word of caution for thunderstorms, lightning and light to moderate-intensity rain and showers in several other parts of the country, including Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and Kerala. Rain and possibly heavy rain are expected in these areas during this weekend.
Considering these forecasts, people in the mentioned areas are suggested to be careful and possibly expect inconveniences connected with the existence of the rains and thunderstorms.
