The first case of HMPV infection reported to Assam this season was recorded recently when a 10-month-old child was found to be infected by the virus. The officials have said that the child is admitted at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, and is stated to be out of danger.

He developed a cold-related illness four days ago and was admitted at AMCH, said Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, the superintendent of the state-run hospital. The HMPV infection was confirmed yesterday when the test results from the Lahowal-located ICMR-RMRC were reported, Dr. Bhuyan said.

Subjects were tested, and samples were taken for flu and flu-associated disease identification, these samples were taken to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Dr. Bhuyan also pointed out that it is not uncommon to detect HMPV and informed the public that there is no concern at all. That was a routine test when they found out she had contracted HMPV. The child is stable now. This is a common virus,” he continued, “there is nothing to worry about.”

Another senior scientist of ICMR-RMRC NE, Lahowal, Dibrugarh, Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, said that HMPV positive cases are reported in the district yearly. “In Dibrugarh district solely, we have documented 110 cases of HMPV after the year 2014. This is the first case of the current season. “t is normal to have such detections, and they are not dangerous,” said Dr. Borkakoty.

HMPV is a virus that impacts the respiratory system, and it is primarily seen in children, the elderly, and those with weak immunities. The signs and symptoms are usually mild and can range from flu-like illnesses such as fever, cough, and congestion. The authorities observed the situation, and the medical staff tried to provide proper treatment to the child.
