A local court in Sambhal has listed the next date of hearing for a matter relating to a Mughal structure, Shahi Jama Masjid, where the Shia Waqf Board has sought a survey of the premises. Continuing the history of the mosque has led to controversy, and the existence of which has more than one version – either Muslim or Hindu.

The advocate for the Muslim community, Shakil Ahmad Wari, stated that they had provided the newly passed Supreme Court order, which temporarily barred all the lower courts from entertaining any new suits seeking surveys of any place of worship. “It is to give a direction that lower courts should not accept such petitions. We have deposited a copy of the order and the court has made the further hearing on March 5,” Wari said to the press.

The issue is more or less similar to that of the dispute where the Hindus argue that the mosque was built on the ruins of the Harihar temple. In response to these allegations, Wari said he was sure that he had ample proof to support his side of the story in the court. He also stated that they have ample proof that it would clearly indicate that this was never a Harihar temple, but it has always been the Jama Masjid only.

The counsel for the Hindus, Gopal Sharma, agreed that the court would hear the matter on March 5. Sharma and his team have been demanding an inspection of the mosque that will support their allegations,

Shahi Jama Masjid, a structure belonging to the Mughal period, has become the centre of these controversies. Such controversies teach many historical and cultural facts about such structures having significance in the tolerant historical past of the country. The court expects to deliver further important determinations on this legal dispute on March 5 by Sambhal court.
