On Tuesday, the Border Security Force (BSF) rubbished media reports stating that the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) had taken possession of a 5-km Indian territory along the International Border(IB), making it baseless and unprofessional. In its response to the BSF South Bengal Frontier, the area referred to is Ranghat village of Bagda block, North 24 Parganas district, which the Indian side claims belongs to them. To prevent border conflicts, the boundary shown by reference pillars at Kodaliya River has remained the same for decades, said the force in an official communiqué.

The BSF flatly denied the news reported in the Bangladeshi media, especially a news headline on the BGB asserting that the 24-hour parade in that region began after December 19 through motorboats and ATVs. The reports are alleged to have been produced by Lt Col Rafique Islam of the 58 BGB Battalion, newly posted as its CO termed such reports as fabricated stories that contain no element of truth and any deserving grounds.

As per the BSF, Indian and Bangladeshi border forces are duty-bound to remain in their respective sides of the border as per the ‘India-Bangladesh Border Guidelines, 1975,’ and the border has not been or will not be intruded into by the ally, the assertion reiterated that the international border is being maintained peacefully.

On the aspect of border management, the BSF acknowledged the constraints in that the region is, however, porous and unguarded and more often characterized by smuggling and intrusion by Bangladeshi nationals. But strict measures and observation have minimized such attempts into the zone to the bare minimum.

According to the statement released by the BSF, it is imperative for India and Bangladesh to restore and continue trusting each other while managing their borders and preventing deserted narratives from spoiling the relationship between their forces.
