New Delhi: There was light drizzle in many areas of the capital on Monday morning, then the chill increased due to wind and cloud cover throughout the day. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog in the next three days. There will be partial fog in Delhi on Tuesday, according to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature is expected to be 8 degrees and maximum 19 degrees. The havoc of cold wave will be more effective in the next three days, due to which there is a possibility of a rapid fall in the maximum temperature.
The temperature the India Meteorological Department recorded on Tuesday was 11.6 degrees Celsius in Delhi at 5.30 am. As per the Met Department, the minimum forecasted temperature is 8 degrees Celsius for the day while the maximum temperature is anticipated to reach around 19 degrees Celsius along with “dense fog” blanketing the city.
Amid Delhi’s gripping cold wave conditions, several people tuned themselves to the night shelters to save themselves from the chilling and biting winds. People sit by a bonfire to keep themselves warm as mercury dipped in the national capital.
Air quality of Delhi remains in the ‘very poor’ category for the second consecutive day, with rain adding to the worries. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 308 at 8 am today, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has also set up 235 pagoda tents to provide shelter to homeless people. Night shelters have been set up in several areas of the national capital, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin flyover.
The dense fog disrupted railway operations, causing several trains to run late. As per the information, around 25 trains are running behind their schedule, including Poorva Express, Vikramshila Express, RJPB Tejas Express, Patalkot Express, Mewar Express and others.
Winter Vacation In Schools Extended
Many schools were scheduled to reopen on 6 January 2025, but the holidays have been extended due to the severity of the cold.
Schools in Haryana, Delhi, and Punjab remain closed. In Ghaziabad, adjacent to Delhi, all schools up to class 8 have been ordered closed due to the intense cold. However, no such order has been issued in Noida yet. Let’s find out which states have extended school holidays.
In Uttar Pradesh, schools for classes 1 to 8 will be shut until January 11, following the District Magistrate’s orders.
According to the official notice, all schools in the state will remain closed from January 1 to January 15, 2025. They are scheduled to reopen on January 16, 2025.
In Punjab, the government extended winter break until January 7 for all government, aided, accredited, and private schools. Schools in the state were set to reopen on January 1 initially.
Delhi schools are closed for 15 days, from January 1 to January 15, and will reopen on January 16.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration began the winter holiday in schools on December 10, up to Class 5. Winter vacation began on December 16 for students in grades 6–12. The school is set to open on February 28.
